Red Currant Barbecue Sauce

Everyone knows that mid-July is the heart of the grilling season, cookouts, and family gatherings. What you may not know, is that it is also the start of Red Currant picking! This recipe is the perfect way to blend both - a Red Currant Barbecue Sauce!  A little sweet, and a little tart - just what your chicken ordered! 

Makes 3 Cups


1 Cup Fresh Red Currants

1 - 14oz Can Tomato Sauce

2 Tbsp Mazzetti White Wine Vinegar

1 Tbsp Tomato Paste

1/2 Cup Brown Sugar

2 Tbsp Molasses

Preparation Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients in a medium sauce pan, and mix well.  Cook over medium heat until it begins to thicken, about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Allow to cool slightly, and then blend until smooth.


  1. Smokey Currant Barbecue Sauce: Add 1-2 teaspoons of Liquid Smoke in with all of the ingredients, and cook as directed above.
  2. Spicy Currant Barbecue Sauce: Add 1 Tbsp of minced Jalapeno Peppers in with all of the ingredients, and then cook and blend as directed above.

Serving Suggestions:

Brush on Chicken, Steak, Tofu and grill!
